When to get a Tune-Up
Here’s the bottom line when it comes to tune-ups: if you have an older vehicle that doesn’t feature an electronic ignition, you should have it tuned up approximately every 10,000 to 12,000 miles, or every year – whichever comes first. So, it looks like you’re due for your next tune-up pretty soon!
Our team of expert automotive technicians at Faulkner Automotive Group created this guide to how often you should get a tune-up. We care about our customers’ driving habits, health, and safety. If you live around Harrisburg, Mechanicsburg or Trevose, Pennsylvania, don’t hesitate to contact us soon.
However, the 10,000-12,000-mile/1-year guideposts are just for older models with non-electronic ignitions. If you have a newer car that sports an electronic ignition (as well as a fuel injection system), then you could drive between 25,000 and 100,000 miles without needing a significant tune-up.
If you’re not exactly sure what type of ignition and fuel injection your vehicle is running, we encourage you to reach out to our Service Department at Faulkner Automotive Group. We can clarify all your questions.
Signs you need a Tune-up
In addition to paying attention to the mileage and time interval since your last tune-up, it’s important to stay on the lookout for the warning signs and symptoms that you might be overdue.
- Your vehicle is stalling a lot.
- Its engine is running roughly while idling.
- Its engine is running roughly while accelerating.
- Your car is getting progressively harder to start.
If you notice any of these symptoms, then it could be time for a serious tune-up. Remember, our guys and gals will have a better sense of what’s going on, and they’ll be able to tell you if you’re in need of a tune-up or some other automotive procedure. Contact us immediately to let us know what’s going on.
Understanding the Basics
Maybe you’re asking yourself: what does a tune-up entail, anyways?
Essentially, an engine tune-up is a maintenance procedure that’s intended to get your car’s engine to run like new. While there’s no official overarching definition, we can give you a sense of our tune-ups.
- For most of our tune-up procedures, we will:
- Replace your car’s spark plugs & plug wires
- Replace the air filter, and the fuel filter
- Check belts, hoses, fluids, and other important components for wear
So, as you can see, there’s no reason to put your next tune-up off, as they cover lot of critical ground.
